Amber Weather Alert: Supporting Our Community During the Cold Snap

SHARE:

As the temperatures drop, our priority is your safety and well-being.

The UK is experiencing a severe cold snap, with Hertfordshire currently under an Amber Weather Alert. At By Your Side, we are committed to supporting our staff, customers, and the wider community during this challenging time. Cold weather can have serious implications for health and safety, especially for vulnerable individuals, and we want to ensure that everyone remains safe, warm, and informed.

How We’re Supporting You

In response to the cold weather alert, we are implementing measures in line with the Cold Health Alert Action Card for Providers Delivering Care to People in Their Homes. These actions include:

  1. Checking on Vulnerable Individuals:
    • Our team will prioritise regular check-ins with individuals who are more vulnerable to cold weather, such as older adults or those with chronic health conditions.
  2. Ensuring Warm Environments:
    • We will advise and assist our clients in maintaining safe indoor temperatures (at least 18°C in living areas) to protect against the health risks associated with cold exposure.
  3. Providing Practical Guidance:
    • We’re equipping our staff with advice to share with clients, including tips on wearing appropriate clothing, staying hydrated, and consuming warm, nutritious meals.
  4. Monitoring Health and Safety:
    • Our carers will stay vigilant for signs of cold-related illnesses, such as hypothermia or the worsening of existing health conditions, and will take appropriate action if needed.
  5. Liaising with Local Services:
    • When additional support is required, we will work closely with local health and community services to ensure clients receive the help they need.

Practical Tips for Staying Safe

We’ve also prepared a helpful guide with practical tips to stay warm and healthy during the cold weather. This guide includes:

  • Advice on keeping your home warm efficiently.
  • Safety tips for traveling in icy or snowy conditions.
  • Essential support numbers to call if you or someone you know needs assistance.
