Did you know that Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? Celebrated over 2,000 years ago, it marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth. To ward off these spirits, people would light bonfires and wear costumes.
The tradition of carving pumpkins originated from the Irish legend of “Stingy Jack,” who was said to have tricked the devil and was condemned to wander the earth with only a carved turnip to light his way. When Irish immigrants came to America, they found that pumpkins were larger and easier to carve, leading to the familiar Halloween jack-o’-lanterns we know today!
